Mourinho Slams Benfica Attitude After Taca de Portugal Win
Benfica manager Jose Mourinho delivered a scathing critique of his team’s attitude following their 2-0 win against third-tier Atletico CP in the Taca de Portugal fourth round. The result sent Benfica through, but Mourinho’s post-match comments indicated he was far from satisfied with the performance.
Benfica Progress, but Mourinho Unimpressed
Benfica, one of Portugal’s most historic clubs, faced Atletico CP, currently in the third division, in what many expected to be a routine cup victory. However, the first half was a frustrating affair for the record 26-time cup winners, as Atletico’s determined defense kept the game goalless at the interval.
Mourinho, in his second spell at the club, responded decisively at halftime. He made four substitutions and changed the tactical setup, later revealing that, if allowed, he would have changed nine players. In his view, only two of his starters had approached the game with the necessary seriousness.
Mourinho’s Explosive Benfica Rant
Speaking after the match, Mourinho said, “Atlético did an extraordinary job. I saw them play recently and knew they could cause problems. Our first half wasn’t just poor tactically – the attitude was unacceptable. There were many players who weren’t serious and didn’t approach things as they should have. At halftime, I made four substitutions, but I really wanted to make nine. Only two were truly committed.”
He continued, “In the second half, our attitude improved and we were able to show our quality. But some players have already been told not to come to me asking why they aren’t playing if they can’t show the right spirit for Benfica.”
Second-Half Improvement Seals Victory
With a rejuvenated lineup, Benfica eventually broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, courtesy of a Ricard Rios header. Vangelis Pavlidis doubled the lead from the penalty spot shortly after, securing Benfica’s passage to the next round. Despite the win, the performance left Mourinho questioning his squad’s mentality.
Benfica’s Domestic and European Struggles
Since taking charge in September 2025 after Bruno Lage’s departure, Mourinho has faced challenges revitalizing Benfica’s season. While unbeaten in the league, a string of draws has left the Eagles trailing six points behind leaders Porto. Their Champions League campaign has also disappointed, with Benfica losing all three of their group matches, most recently a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Leverkusen.
Crucial Fixtures Ahead for Mourinho’s Benfica
Looking forward, Mourinho’s side faces a critical period. Their next fixture is a pivotal Champions League tie against Ajax, followed by a highly anticipated Lisbon derby against Sporting on December 5. An encounter with Napoli and Antonio Conte looms shortly after, adding further pressure as Benfica aims to salvage their European campaign and close the gap at the top of Liga Portugal.

Opinion: Mourinho’s Tough Love Could Spark Benfica Revival
Mourinho’s public criticism, while harsh, could serve as the wake-up call his squad needs. Benfica’s recent performances show flashes of their potential, but a shift in mentality is crucial if they are to compete on all fronts. With vital fixtures upcoming, the response of the players to their manager’s demands will be key to determining whether Benfica can turn their season around under Mourinho’s leadership.
