Rabiot Reveals Why He Chose AC Milan and Allegri Reunion

Adrien Rabiot on AC Milan Switch: Allegri Reunion and Serie A Return

Adrien Rabiot’s move to AC Milan has been one of the most talked-about transfers in Serie A this season, marking a new chapter for the French midfielder and a reunion with head coach Massimiliano Allegri. Rabiot, who joined Milan after a turbulent spell at Marseille, revealed that his decision was shaped by his admiration for Allegri’s winning mentality and coaching philosophy.

Adrien Rabiot’s Tumultuous Exit from Marseille

The start of the 2025 season saw Marseille embroiled in chaos, as off-field incidents overshadowed their Ligue 1 campaign. The turning point came after Rabiot’s altercation with teammate Jonathan Rowe, a clash that escalated to the point where security had to intervene. The situation worsened when 17-year-old Darryl Bakola was inadvertently injured during the fray.

Following the incident, Marseille’s head coach Roberto De Zerbi suspended both Rabiot and Rowe, placing them on the transfer list. Club president Pablo Longoria condemned the events as “completely unheard of in the world of football.” Although De Zerbi hinted at a potential future for Rabiot at Marseille, the midfielder’s fate was effectively sealed, leading to his sale to AC Milan.

AC Milan and Allegri: The Appeal of a Winning Mentality

For Rabiot, joining AC Milan meant more than just a fresh start. It was a return to Serie A, a league where he had thrived previously with Juventus between 2019 and 2024. Most importantly, it was a chance to reunite with Allegri, under whom he had built a strong professional and personal rapport.

“He’s a winner, and I like his personality, his coaching style, his passion for football, and his ambition,” Rabiot told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “He always gives his all, and I see myself in his way of thinking. Off the pitch, he’s very positive, cracks jokes, and keeps us calm.”

Rabiot recalled that he originally joined Juventus in 2019 because Allegri was at the helm. Although Allegri left before Rabiot’s arrival, their eventual collaboration fostered a bond that would influence Rabiot’s later choices. “When Allegri returned in 2021, we created a great relationship, on and off the pitch,” he added.

Why Rabiot Chose AC Milan Over Other Clubs

Rabiot’s return to Serie A was not a straightforward path. He revealed that Milan had shown interest in him as early as 2024 while he was a free agent, and again during his troubled spell at Marseille. “Milan approached me last year, and we talked. Would we have finished higher than eighth with me? I don’t know, but given what we’re doing now, I’d say I arrived at the right time,” Rabiot reflected.

After the incident at Marseille, other Italian clubs expressed interest, but Rabiot was set on Milan and reuniting with Allegri. “I knew what I wanted,” he explained. “Allegri told me, ‘Let’s see what happens…’ and something really happened. He always seems to foresee the future.”

Adrien Rabiot’s Focus Amid Title Hopes

While Milan have enjoyed an impressive start this season, positioning themselves as title contenders in Serie A, Rabiot is cautious about early Scudetto talk. “It’s too early to think about the league title,” he said. “We’re focused on winning every game and achieving our goals. The more weeks go by, the more we see the quality and mentality of the group. If we stay injury-free, we can give it a real shot in February or March.”

Rabiot acknowledged the importance of the season ahead, both with Milan and for his hopes with the French national team. “I have an important year ahead, where I can win with both Milan and France. I hope to reach the World Cup final.”

Milan’s Current Standing and Upcoming Challenges

Under Allegri’s leadership, AC Milan have bounced back strongly after their opening defeat to Cremonese. With seven wins and four draws since, Milan sit second in Serie A with 25 points. The next test arrives as they prepare to welcome Lazio to San Siro on Saturday.

Opinion: Rabiot and Allegri, a Partnership Built on Mutual Respect

Rabiot’s journey to AC Milan highlights the importance of player-coach relationships in modern football. His admiration for Allegri’s approach, combined with his desire for a stable and ambitious environment, has set the stage for a potentially fruitful chapter at Milan. If Rabiot maintains his focus and Milan continue to build on their momentum, this reunion could deliver success for both the player and the club.
